In Indian culture and tradition, everyone has seen a lot of changes from the past few years due to the effect of westernization. In the modern era, Modernization brings a lot of transformation in beliefs, viewpoints, religion, dance, and music of Indian culture and tradition.
Culture means aware of customs, traditions of one country. It is necessary wherever you live you must aware of their culture and tradition. Suppose if someone is doing business in the international environment, then it is very essential for that person to familiar with all cultural peculiarities. Complete recognition and awareness of cultural peculiarities and traditions are one of the keys for the person to getting global commercial success.
Apart from that, it is very necessary for the person who is doing job for the international company must familiar with many things such as power distance, display of respect, uncertainty, avoidance, in-group and institutional collectivism, gender egalitarianism, assertiveness, future orientation, performance and human orientation to achieve goals and targets for the company.
Difference between Indian Culture and Western Culture:
- Indian culture and tradition is a mixture of rituals, tradition, while western culture is quite advanced in norms, values, customs, and practices. Western culture is greatly influenced by European culture.
- In Indian culture, every individual is deeply attached to their family, while bonding of relationship of an individual in a western nation is not so strong. Even there is much youth in western countries leave their families at the age of 18 and enjoy their life without any interference of others.
- Indian culture gives more weight age to society as compared to an individual. In western culture, society does not take part in the life of an individual.
- Moreover, wide variation is seen in the food of western society. Western culture is mainly known for its popular fast food while Indian prefers traditional meals.
- Apart from it, in western society, there is no discrimination among the people the basis of caste and creeds, gender etc. While this discrimination is usually seen in Indian society. Women’s are considered inferior in Indian society than men.
- There is no doubt that India is a country with a unique and mysterious civilization. It has very rich and diverse cultural traditions that really influenced all spheres of life. In Indian society, people give more priority to many factors such as regionalism, caste, language, and religion. On the other hand, British people are also well known for their passion and love for traditions and culture. The outlook on all aspects of life and their behavior is practical. British culture is part of modern western society so it brings full of changes, so in British countries, many changes are taking place in the country from year to year.
- Indian believes in interpersonal relationships more than other nations. They have problems to work in the non-hierarchical structure. Moreover, India society and business are based on hierarchy structured. Before any type of business arguments, win-win relationships occurs as a result of mutual trust and friendship. On the other hand, western culture believes in non-hierarchal structured.
- British societies do not believe in low power distance, so the question of inequalities between people is not prevalent and be minimized. In British, all people are considered equal. But in Indian society inequalities exists among different religions. Hofstede’s analysis of all factors in India and search out there are large power distance and offer appreciation to the people of top-down structure not only in organizations but in the whole society.Top-down a structure can be seen in the variety of ways. Indians most dependent on the boss to show the right direction there is inequality prevalent between the power privileged and those who are less important in society. The huge power distance means that caste system. Hinduism based on the caste system where a relationship is formed in the hierarchy system.
- Indian culture and tradition give more importance to collective traits. According to the collective traits person must be influenced by different relationships such as family, work group, neighbors and other social networks. Even hiring of employees in Indian offices and encouragement decisions are also conducted on the basis of relationship in India which is an example, giving the explanation to everything that India is a collectivist society. It more focus on group goals rather than individual goals.
- India holds one of the lowest positions in the world at the rate of genders. Quality gender inequality can be seen in many formats such as educational attainment, economic participation, health and survival, political empowerment. Indians believe in a hierarchical level more than gender subject so only those women get respected and admired who holds a position of authority in society.
- Britishers believed in short-term oriented business & having great honor for traditions. Business is concentrated on quick results and short-term goals. London stock exchanges give more attention to profit quarterly rather than long-term results.
- India has low uncertainty avoidance here people do not take any active initiatives and contentedly stay in their routine life without facing criticized questions. The society with a long-term orientation naturally is characterized by lack of punctuality. People in India mostly bypassing the rules and that is why there is saying nothing is impossible in India.
